Tarkington served a term in the Indiana legislature, and these stories draw on what he saw there. A retired ward-worker offers his wisdom, a boss named Gorgett handles his machine, immigrant voters are bought and sold, a drunken old Democrat harangues the loafers, and the formidable Mrs. Protheroe shows how influence works in the drawing room.
