Lincoln’s young secretary and future Secretary of State wrote these dialect ballads of Mississippi River country: Jim Bludso, who holds his burning steamboat against the bank until every passenger is ashore, Little Breeches, Banty Tim and the Mystery of Gilgal. The rest of the book gathers his lyrics and political poems on Europe, liberty and faith.
Rough-hewn frontier verse that delighted readers in its day, beside Hay’s more formal work. Download the free EPUB.
