Farmers, hired hands, widows and quarrelling couples of rural New Hampshire speak in blank verse close to ordinary talk. Two neighbours walk their boundary in spring setting fallen stones back on the wall; a husband and wife argue over an old labourer who has come home to die; a grieving mother cannot forgive the way her husband dug their child’s grave.
