Teasdale’s 1920 collection, dedicated simply to E., is arranged in eleven numbered groups of brief rhymed lyrics. Blue squills, meadowlarks, driftwood, a sunset over St. Louis, a night in a hospital and the stars above them all become occasions for quiet meditations on love, memory and the fear of time passing.
