Bierce preserves the targets of his newspaper columns like insects in resin: San Francisco politicians, lawyers, preachers, poetasters and editors, skewered by name in epigrams, mock epitaphs and longer satires. Many of the victims were known only on the Pacific Coast, as his introduction admits, but the venom travels well.
