Little Gerty sits on a dark doorstep in a Boston street, starved and beaten by the woman who keeps her, waiting for the lamplighter to come by. Old Trueman Flint takes her home, and the novel follows her through his care, the friendship of a blind young woman named Emily and years of struggle with her own fierce temper toward love and self-command.
