At a country house called Weatherend, John Marcher meets May Bartram again and is startled to learn that he once confided his deepest secret to her: a lifelong conviction that something rare and terrible lies in wait for him. She agrees to keep watch with him, and the years pass in their quiet companionship as he waits for the beast to spring.
A short masterpiece of James’s late style, and one of the finest novellas in English about a life unlived. Download the free EPUB.
