Rowland Mallet, rich, idle and conscientious, discovers a gifted young sculptor in Northampton, Massachusetts, and carries him off to study in Rome. There Roderick’s talent flares, but so does his temperament, and the beautiful, capricious Christina Light pulls him away from work and from Mary Garland, the fiancée waiting at home.
