Plotted on a long steamboat voyage from New Orleans to Cincinnati in 1848, this melodrama follows Emily, the heiress of a Southern plantation, menaced by fortune-hunters and a duellist with a revolver, and protected by Hatchie, an enslaved man of great courage and loyalty. Its picture of slavery and of Black characters is very much that of 1850s popular fiction.
