Dr. Sevier is a severe, upright physician whose office stands near Carondelet Street, the road to wealth in New Orleans. He takes an interest in John and Mary Richling, a young married couple who have come to the city with nothing, and follows them through illness, unemployment, debt and separation, as the Civil War draws near.
