A young mother wakes to find her newborn son gone, taken away by her own mother, who refuses to let her see her husband. The child is passed into the hands of the poor, and the story descends into a district of grog shops and misery, where reformers struggle against drink and the trade that profits from it.
A temperance novel by the author of Ten Nights in a Bar-Room, earnest and vivid about city poverty. Download the free EPUB.
