In the summer of 1874 two young Englishmen, Lord Lambeth and his watchful cousin Percy Beaumont, arrive in a sweltering New York and are swept off to the hospitality of Newport. Lambeth is drawn to Bessie Alden, a serious, bookish young woman from Boston, and when the scene shifts to London the question becomes what his family, and Bessie herself, will make of the match.
A light, witty novella of American and English manners, an easy door into James’s international theme. Download the free EPUB.
