Eugene Witla grows up in Alexandria, Illinois, in the 1880s, a dreamy boy with a gift for drawing who heads for Chicago and then New York. He marries Angela Blue, a schoolteacher from Wisconsin, and rises as a painter and later as a magazine executive, while one love affair after another strains the marriage and his own nerves.
Dreiser’s most autobiographical novel, attacked by censors in 1916 for its candour, and a major American portrait of the artist. Download the free EPUB.
