Very fat and perspiring, Scattergood Baines walks the twenty-four miles from the railroad into Coldriver Valley and sits down on the porch of the grocery store. Before long he owns the hardware store, then a good deal more, and he uses his genius for business to make matches, rescue the unlucky and outwit the greedy.
Warm, shrewd small-town comedy that kept American magazine readers laughing for decades. Download the free EPUB.
