Elmer Gantry is introduced drunk and singing in the gaudiest saloon in Cato, Missouri, a football hero with a booming voice and few scruples. Pushed into the ministry, he rises through Baptist seminary, travelling revivalism alongside the evangelist Sharon Falconer, and Methodist pulpits, seducing, lying and preaching his way toward power.
