Left in a basket on the steps of the quarrelsome Hank and Elmira Walters, Danny grows up without a last name and soon sets out to see the world. In his own salty backwoods dialect he describes riding the rails through Tennessee and Kentucky, falling in with a travelling medicine-show doctor, and sizing up the American small town and its notions.
