Samuel Benton Barron, born in Alabama in 1834 and settled in Texas, served with the 3rd Texas Cavalry from May 1861 to May 1865. His recollections follow the regiment from Arkansas and Missouri through the campaigns of the western theatre, with close detail of marches, camps, illness, friends lost and the families who sheltered sick soldiers.
