Writing just after the Civil War, the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin sketches the public lives of the men she believed had saved the Union and ended slavery: Lincoln, Grant, Sherman and Sheridan, abolitionists Garrison and Phillips, Frederick Douglass, Charles Sumner, Salmon Chase and her brother Henry Ward Beecher among them. Her sources are speeches, records and anecdotes, and she leaves private lives alone.
