Richard Lamb, a young Englishman who has eloped with an Argentine girl, crosses into the Banda Oriental, today’s Uruguay, in search of work and spends months wandering its estancias, villages and battlefields. Along the way he falls in with gauchos, revolutionaries and storytellers such as the grave old Nepomucino, and loses his heart more often than is wise.
First published in 1885 and nearly forgotten before its revival, it is Hudson’s loving portrait of the River Plate country he knew in youth. Download the free EPUB.
