In the gold-rush days of the 1880s, a young transport rider hauling goods by ox-wagon through the Transvaal picks the weakling of a litter and raises him into a fearless hunting dog. Kudu, wildebeest, baboons, crocodiles, drunken drivers and wagon-road hardships fill these chapters, first told as bedtime stories to the author’s own children.
South Africa’s best-loved dog story, warm, funny and full of bush lore, though its views of African people belong to its colonial era. Download the free EPUB.
