Blincoe was apprenticed out of a London workhouse at seven and spent his childhood in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire mills. The account of the hours, the beatings, the maimings and the deaths was taken down from him directly, circulated by the factory reformers, and helped to force the Factory Acts through Parliament.
