Published in 1919 with a warm preface by Freud, this diary of a girl from eleven to fourteen was celebrated as an unprecedented record of female adolescence. Later scholars have argued it was heavily edited, and possibly written, by the psychoanalyst who presented it — which makes it a document of two different things at once.
