Dewey argues that German political conduct grew from a philosophical tradition: Kant’s separation of the inner moral world from the outer world of necessity, and Hegel’s elevation of the state above the individual. Whether or not the argument holds, it is a fascinating attempt to blame a war on metaphysics.
