William Brodie was a deacon of the wrights, a town councillor, and the head of a gang of housebreakers who used keys copied from the locks he installed. His trial and hanging in 1788 gave Stevenson the germ of Jekyll and Hyde. This Notable British Trials volume gives the whole proceeding.
