Veblen looked at the wealthy the way an anthropologist looks at a tribe, and found a leisure class whose consumption, dress, sport and manners exist to display an exemption from useful work. He gave the language “conspicuous consumption” and “pecuniary emulation,” and the joke has never worn off.
