Socrates corners a successful reciter of Homer and asks him what, exactly, he is expert in. The answer turns out to be nothing: the poet and his interpreter are magnetised links in a chain running back to the Muse, inspired rather than knowing. It is the first argument about whether art is a form of knowledge.
