Sir Thomas Upmore, baronet and M.P., looks back on a boyhood marked by signs of eminence, the pursuit of science and a peculiar bodily gift that made him a curiosity to men of science. Blackmore uses Tommy’s adventures to poke fun at Victorian science, Oxford and above all the Liberal politics of the 1880s.
