Edward William Lane, the great Arabist and translator of The Thousand and One Nights, chose and translated passages of the Qur’an and arranged them by subject so that readers could grasp its teaching without reading it straight through. His grand-nephew Stanley Lane-Poole’s revised edition of 1879 adds an introduction on the Arabs before Muhammad, the Prophet’s life, Islam and the Qur’an itself.
A Victorian scholar’s introduction to the Qur’an, careful for its time though not a modern translation. Download the free EPUB.
