Stukeley spent summers in the 1720s measuring, drawing and digging at Stonehenge, and here he describes the circles, the trilithons, the altar stone, the avenue and the cursus he named. His fieldwork remains valuable; his conclusion that the monument was a temple of the Druids, long since discarded, launched the romantic association that still clings to the stones.
