In the summer of 1915 Colonel Laidlaw took down these stories from Peter York, an Ojibwa basket maker from the Rama Reserve near Lake Couchiching, some of them first told by his father John York, then aged 96. The trickster Nanabush, the Thunderbirds, Rat and Beaver, and the Big Sturgeon appear in numbered tales kept as close to York’s own phrasing as possible.
A plain, unpolished record of Ontario Ojibwa storytelling for anyone interested in Indigenous oral tradition. Download the free EPUB.
