Proctor begins with the terror comets once inspired as portents of war and plague, then turns to the science: comet-hunting as a hobby, Donati’s brilliant comet, comets broken apart in space, photography of the heavens and the return of Halley’s comet in 1910. Meteors and shooting stars complete the tour.
