Room by room, beginning in the entrance hall and library, this 1881 catalogue takes each portrait at Longleat in Wiltshire and tells the life of its sitter. The result is a gallery of English history in anecdote, from Thynnes and courtiers to Arabella Stuart’s attempted flight by sea.
A charming way into English family history through one great country house. Download the free EPUB.
