In the bar of the White Hart at Moretonhampstead the head gamekeeper of Middlecott Court is mocked by his neighbours, and a feud between keepers and the poachers of the moor is soon in the open. A wedding, guns in the night and the sailing of a bad ship to the West Indies leave a young wife grieving and courted by a man she does not trust.
