In the title story a young man reads in his dead father’s journal of a quarrel at remote Furnivaux Castle in Westmorland and a planned marriage to one of his great-aunt’s nieces. The other tales are just as dark, with witch-drownings, a wedding night gone wrong and a lost mistress, all told in a jewelled, decadent prose.
