Mr. Twiss, a solicitor who walks home from the Adelphi to Hampstead, asks a client’s company for a reason that unfolds into a story about a clock. Other tales range across Europe, Africa and the tropics, mixing crime, espionage, regimental life and odd psychological twists, such as a convalescent who tries to teach a dog to see a man as he does.
