On Christmas morning in Antioch, some fifteen hundred years ago, the student Hermas is weary of poverty and of the faith he is training to serve. A stranger offers him riches and pleasure in exchange for a single word, the name of God. Hermas accepts, and his new life is full and rich until he finds he has lost the one word he needs.
