Beginning at Kit Carson in Colorado Territory in October 1871, Frances Roe wrote home from the army posts where her husband served for the next seventeen years. Her letters describe log and adobe quarters, buffalo and antelope, riding and shooting, desperadoes, Native peoples and the routine of garrison life on the plains and in Montana.
A lively, first-hand record of the frontier army; its attitudes towards Native Americans are those of an officer’s wife of the 1870s. Download the free EPUB.
