Don Ippolito, a Venetian priest with a gift for mechanical invention and no vocation for the Church, slips through the narrow calli to the house of the American consul, Ferris. There he meets Florida Vervain and her mother, and his hopes of escape to America become bound up with a love that can only end in misunderstanding.
An early Howells novel drawn from his years as consul in Venice, subtle and touching. Download the free EPUB.
