On the terrace at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, the young American Longmore is introduced to Euphemia de Mauves, an American girl who married a French baron for his ancient name. He soon discovers that her husband, Richard de Mauves, is unfaithful, and that her own fierce idea of honour leaves Longmore’s devotion nowhere to go.
An early James novella that already holds his great theme of Americans meeting old Europe. Download the free EPUB.
