The story opens on a December night in Devondale, Ohio, as the town turns out for Barbara’s wedding. Her brother Laurie, a young man with ambitions as a dramatist, soon meets Miss Mayo, is haunted by a pair of gray eyes, and follows the odd Herbert Ransome Shaw to a shabby building that holds more than he bargained for.
