Picking up after the Battle of Loos, Hay follows the same Scottish battalion of Kitchener’s Army through a winter campaign around Ypres and Ploegsteert. There are trench raids, shellfire, makeshift sports and leave, and a careful account of how artillery and infantry learned to work together, leading up to the Battle of the Somme.
