Before the Savoy operas, Gilbert wrote comic ballads for the magazine Fun, illustrating them himself as Bab: the indulgent Captain Reece, the rival curates, Annie Protheroe and her gentle executioner, and many more. This edition joins them to the lyrics of his operas, the Songs of a Savoyard, with some 350 of his drawings.
Topsy-turvy Victorian nonsense that seeded H.M.S. Pinafore and The Mikado, for any lover of Gilbert’s wit. Download the free EPUB.
