In 1849 and 1850 Sir William Sleeman, the British Resident at Lucknow best known for his campaign against the Thugs, toured the kingdom of Oudh to report on its condition. His diary records lawless landholders, mud forts, oppressed cultivators, shrines and village customs, alongside his private letters on the annexation question. Both volumes are included.
