Before his fame on the Nile, Baker founded an English farming settlement in the Ceylon highlands at Newera Ellia. He describes Colombo, the struggles of the colonists, jungle fever, the sagacity of elephants, and at great length his hunting of elephant, buffalo, deer and boar with hounds through jungle and plain.
A vivid colonial memoir whose attitudes to hunting and empire are very much those of the 1850s. Download the free EPUB.
