In 1844 Thackeray took a free passage on a P&O steamer and sailed from Southampton by way of Vigo, Lisbon, Cadiz and Gibraltar to Athens, Smyrna, Constantinople, Jaffa, Jerusalem and Cairo. He records the voyage with sharp, comic eyes, deflating romantic ideas of the East and of classical Greece while sketching fellow passengers, guides and bazaars.
