Before symbolic logic had textbooks fit for children, Lewis Carroll gave it a game board. The Game of Logic (1886) teaches the syllogism with red and grey counters on a diagram of his own devising, worked through propositions about new cakes, nice things, and other Carrollian stock-in-trade — nonsense on the surface, rigorous logic underneath.
It is the gentlest possible introduction to formal reasoning, written by the Oxford logician who happened also to be the century’s greatest writer of nonsense. Download the free EPUB and learn to reason as Alice’s author thought everyone should — by playing.
