An English officer looks back over forty years of service: at sea in the Dutch War of 1672, in Flanders, and above all in Spain with the Earl of Peterborough during the War of the Spanish Succession. Captured and held for years as a prisoner, he describes Spanish towns, monasteries, nunneries and bullfights with a traveller’s curiosity. Published in 1728, the book was long attributed to Daniel Defoe; whether it is memoir or fiction is still debated.
