Writing as a plain-spoken householder, Defoe complains that London’s maidservants and footmen demand high wages, dress above their station, refuse hard work and change places at will. He tells of country girls who arrive in the city and within months turn fine ladies, and proposes ways of regulating servants’ wages and conduct.
A pointed, often comic social document of Georgian London, revealing as much about employers as servants. Download the free EPUB.
