How do the hymns of the Psalter compare with the praise songs sung to Asshur, Marduk and Shamash? Cumming sorts the Hebrew psalms into sanctuary, eschatological and nature hymns, sets beside them the Assyro-Babylonian hymns recovered from cuneiform tablets, and compares their forms, their images of the gods and their religious ideas, quoting generously from both.
