Roberts opens with an essay on the animal story as a literary form, then puts it into practice in tales of the Canadian wilderness. Rabbits play under the moon, an eagle rules the sky, a wild goose pines for the north, a boy befriends a great horned owl, and lynx, bear and their neighbours live and die by the laws of the woods.
